PROFILE: Jim Lahm has been in the Global Positioning System (GPS) industry for 20 years. He began by selling Trimble Navigation products for a local survey supply dealer in Oregon in 1987. Within two years he became the GPS sales specialist, focusing on selling and supporting GPS hardware and software, including all survey and mapping products. Responsibilities consisted of contacting potential customers, providing field demonstrations and conducting seminars, assessing customer’s equipment needs, providing procurement proposals, installing the equipment and providing hardware/software support and installation training.

In 1994 he became a Trimble Pathfinder Certified Trainer. This authorized Jim to conduct factory training classes at the customer's location on behalf of the manufacturer. In early 1995, he started GPS Education Resource, a company dedicated to GPS training and "teaching the finer points of GPS."

In March 1996, he created To The Point, a GPS newsletter sent to all clients and students.  To The Point contained articles, information and news about the GPS industry.  Columns like "Did You Know?" and "Congratulations to Graduating Students" became regular features (it was published several times a year, but is no longer available.  For current GPS news items, go to  GPS News.

In August 2001, he was hired by Electronic Data Solutions of Jerome, Idaho.  His job title is GPS/GIS Specialist.  Jim now sells Trimble GPS Mapping Systems, while providing certified training around the country.  In addition to selling Trimble Mapping products, he is also responsible for offering other data capture devices and field computers.  These include: the AllegroCX and the Archer from Juniper Systems, and the Ranger and Recon from Trimble.

Electronic Data Solutions is an ESRI Business Partner.  This allows Jim to offer the full range of ESRI GIS software, including: ArcPad 6 (for Windows CE devices), ArcView, ArcInfo, ArcGIS 9.x and many other extensions.  We also have a fully-staffed software development division and systems integration division that can design software and systems for your specific needs.

In 2007, he conducted 17 Trimble Certified Mapping classes, many of which were for ArcPad 7 and GPScorrect with GPS Analyst,  in addition to TerraSync and Pathfinder Office.  He is one of 8 instructors nationwide authorized to teach the ArcPad7 for Mobile GIS class in the new APT (ArcPad Training) Program.  This program is authorized by Trimble Navigation and ESRI.

In 2006, he conducted 14 Trimble Certified Mapping classes.

In March of 2005 he became a Trimble Certified Trainer for GPS Analyst Extension for ArcGIS.

On April 14, 2006, Trimble CEO Steve Berglund and other key Trimble leaders, traveled to the home office of Electronic Data Solutions in Jerome, Idaho, and bestowed the 2005 Trimble Partner of the Year award to David and Linda Dean, and their employees.  Jim Lahm, Ryan Pierson, Dawn Dionne, Jackson Beighle, and the entire Mapping and GIS sales, support and repair team were present to accept this honor.

Electronic Data Solutions is the largest Trimble Mapping and GIS dealer in the world according to Trimble sales figures for 2005.

One of Jim’s GPS mapping projects was in Placerville, California at a local winery. The owner needed accurate acreage values for each variety of grapes planted. In addition he wanted a new map depicting road placement, well locations, building sites, rock out-cropping locations and acreage of proposed planting areas. This information proved invaluable in planning future expansion and managing existing resources.

Another project used survey-grade GPS equipment. The Corps of Engineers wanted to find out how much water they could release from Heppner dam (Heppner, OR) during high-water conditions. The water would flow through Willow Creek, traveling 45 miles north to the Columbia River.  Jim worked with a survey firm from Longview, Washington to collect cross-section data on 18 miles of Willow Creek. What would have taken 17 days using conventional survey equipment, took only 5 days using GPS. The data was used to create a digital terrain model to determine the volume of water that could safely be released without flooding local farmlands (accuracy specs: 1/10th foot).  To view a slide show about this project, click here.

Historical

In 2003, I had two opportunities of a lifetime.  I was in Cooperstown, New York in that July,  to see my brother-in-law, Gary Carter, inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame and I got to meet the former President of the United States, George Herbert Walker Bush.

Both were wonderful and awe-inspiring experiences.
